Before joining Grunberg & Co I had worked at a small firm of accountants, where I had begun my training and gained lots of experience working on charity accounts. However I felt I needed broader exposure to different clients and once I joined Grunberg & Co. it soon became clear that they had much more to teach me. The firm was quick to bring me up to speed on limited company accounting and has pushed me throughout my career to work with more complex businesses, including large listed companies.

Looking back now, this gave me a fantastic chance to prove myself. While I had some technical knowledge and a degree in accounting, this exposure has widened my horizons and expertise considerably since I joined.

Although I am still studying for my final ACCA qualifications, the firm has been willing to focus on my skills and passion, rather than my accreditations, allowing me to continue to progress, something which other firms may not have done. I am always being offered the opportunity to try new challenges and work in new areas, which has helped widen my knowledge and has been integral to my rapid advancement.

My original career aspirations were to go into the property market but I left university in the middle of the 2008 financial crisis, where finding graduate positions was tough.

There was a family interest in accountancy and so I started looking for positions and applied for many jobs. Eventually, when a role came up within the family firm I decided to apply. Not wanting to be singled out, I made it clear that I wanted to be treated like any other candidate and went through a rigorous interview.

I was one of the firm’s first true trainees (at the time the practice only had three teams and 25 members of staff). I worked under each of the partners honing my skills and undertaking my studies.

Then one of the existing managers left and I took the opportunity to progress, becoming the firm’s first Assistant Manager so that I could build my expertise and experience whilst assisting the Partners with their growing portfolios.

I learned a lot during this period and was given lots of opportunities to challenge myself and try new things.

The firm has always been willing to let me have a go at different tasks and trusted me to develop my unique areas of expertise.

I joined Grunberg & Co straight from college, where I had studied for a BTEC and was the first AAT apprentice that the firm had taken on at the time.

I had always had an interest in accountancy and so I applied initially for a bookkeeping job but was offered this fantastic new opportunity.

I like how the firm was so much like a family, rather than a traditional firm of accountants.

The culture the practice has created meant that I have always been able to go to anyone for help, from my Manager up to the Partners.

I have always been up to a challenge and trying new things that test me and the firm has always been supportive and willing to let me take on new work – they have never stifled my progress or passion for the job.

I joined Grunberg & Co as a graduate after leaving London Metropolitan University with a degree in accounting and finance.
Everyone was really friendly and welcoming and there were people who had been through the same process here to help me every step of the way.

The support throughout my career has been really good. Whenever I have struggled or faced a new challenge there was always someone there to help me.

What stands out though, is the relationship that all staff have with the Partners. I know from speaking with friends training at other firms that there can sometimes be barriers to seeing and working with top-level Partners but this has never been the case at Grunberg & Co.
